Avian Botulism Oubreak News POST May 2024

Botulism in Lake Jualbup

Avian botulism was detected in Shenton Park’s Lake Jualbup in January 2024 but recent rain – after seven months of drought – disturbed sediment and caused an outbreak.

On May 2nd, our volunteers ended up rescuing 23 ducks (Pacific black ducks, grey teals, pink-eared ducks and a shelduck) with two more ducks (a shelduck and Pacific black duck) rescued on May 6th, making it 25 in total.

Thank you to our volunteers, Craig, Matt, Kate, Yhana and Louie for responding so quickly and we thank our friends WA Wildlife for taking these affected birds on at short-notice. And a big thank you to the Environmental Project Officers and Rangers of Shenton Park for their help too.
